Rice Krispies Treats
It is insanely easy to make these classic treats. You don’t have to use real Rice Krispies, but use a good quality puffed rice cereal. These treats lend themselves to experimentation. For example, use Cocoa Krispies, or some other kind of cereal. Add peanut butter or chocolate chips. Toast the marshmallows in the oven first. Brown the butter first. Tint layers different colors and make American flags or rainbows. Push the mixture into molds and make Easter eggs, or teddy bears. Pinterest probably has fifty variations of these. This is the basic recipe and it’s always welcome at any family reunion or party.
1/4 cup butter (real butter is best)
4 cups miniature marshmallows
(8-10.5 oz. bag marshmallows)
Or 40 large marshmallows*
Or 2 cups marshmallow creme
(optional) 1/2 t. vanilla
5 cups Rice Krispies
Butter a 9 X 13 -inch pan.
(A double recipe will fit into a 10 X 15 inch jelly roll pan.)
Melt butter in a large pot over medium-low heat. Add marshmallows; stir over low heat until melted. Add Rice Krispies and stir until coated. Press warm mixture into buttered pan using buttered hands. Let cool; cut into squares.
*Note: Do not try to use stale marshmallows. Use only fresh marshmallows.
